NCAA Changes

June 27th, 2009

Unfortunately, the new NCAA changes have passed.  I really think that this is going to hurt the already suffering sport.  :(

According to NCAA.org:

Instead of the top six teams competing for the team title on the second day of the championship, the gymnastics committee wants the top four teams to advance to the finals (a concept the committee has dubbed “four on the floor”). The change would eliminate byes during the NCAA finals, making it easier for fans to follow the standings. The change also would shorten the competition, making it easier to broadcast live, which in turn could give college women’s gymnastics more fan appeal.

The committee also is recommending that the score of every gymnast who competes on an apparatus count toward the team’s final score.  Currently, six gymnasts compete on each apparatus but only the top five scores count, allowing a team to make a mistake and still contend for the title. Making all six scores count toward a team’s final score will help fans be more involved in the event, Plinske said. The change would be in effect only during NCAA regional and national competition.

The committee is also recommending changes to the date formula. Rather than competing on a Thursday-Friday-Saturday (with the team championship on Friday and the individual championships on Saturday), the events would move to Friday-Saturday-Sunday. The regional competitions to determine the 12 finalists would be conducted the first Saturday in April. The national championship would be the third weekend in April.

The committee hopes to have the changes implemented with the 2011 championship, set for a neutral site in Cleveland.  The Championships/Sport Management Cabinet must approve the recommendations.

I am really not happy with one of these changes!  I especially hate the 6 up 6 count.  Sure gymnastics is about perfection and every gymnast should hit, but with the 6 up 6 count we are going to see basic routines now.  The gymnasts are only going to throw skills they know they can hit!  We probably won’t see major releases on bars, full-in’s on floor, yurchenko 1 1/2’s on vault, or multiple layout series on beam.

Not Fun!

What do you think of the changes?

Questions

June 27th, 2009

Hey all, I’ve had a couple of you leave me a couple posts that I want to just respond to.

As far as Michael Jackson, it’s a terrible death and the world of music did lose the greatest pop artist of all time.  It’s sad that we lost the person who has had millions of people mimick their dance moves, including Shawn Johnson.  Remember that clip during tour last year of her, her cousin Tori, and Ashley Postell doing Thriller?  I think that clip got taken down off youtube because I couldn’t find it.  :(

So yes, R.I.P. Michael Jackson, you are already terribly missed.

As far as the layout, it’s not staying.  It was just a simple layout for now, I’m working on a new one.  I figured I’ve had the Chinese-ish layout since the games last year so I should probably work on a new one.  It’s not going to be anything special, but it will still be something new.  :)

Ok that’s all!

Neat Video

June 23rd, 2009

Saltocafe always posts some pretty cool videos on his youtube channel and I was really interested when I saw the title, Standing Triple!

Well there isn’t a standing triple full in there.  There is a standing backhandspring back triple full which is still pretty awesome.

My favorite had to be the standing backhandspring double arabian.  Now that’s hard!

Congrats Courtney!

June 23rd, 2009

Courtney Kupets won the Honda-Broderick Cup!!!  She is the first Georgia Gym-Dog to take the award and only the second gymnast ever.  She looked gorgeous as usual accepting the award.  She deserves everything she has won, she has been one of the greatest NCAA gymnasts of all time, if not the greatest.

Courtney Kupets Wins

Make It Or Break It Premiere

June 23rd, 2009

Well Make It Or Break It Premiered last night on ABC Family and I must say I was pretty disappointed.  I know I’m still going to watch it every week but I had hoped they would get things a little closer to the reality of gymnastics.  They had the new code for scores and the girls were getting 15’s and 16’s doing double tuck dismounts off bars and yurchenko layouts on vault.

When Emily crashed her vault I love how she crashed doing a forward flip to her neck when her vault was actually a tuck tsuk.

However, my biggest peeve of the night was the eating disorder.  DOES EVERY MAIN STREAM GYMNASTICS SHOW OR MOVIE HAVE TO ALWAYS DEAL WITH AN EATING DISORDER? Seriously!!!

Besides the flaws I’m still excited that gymnastics is even getting the chance at going mainstream.  Kudo’s to ABC Family for trying to make a good show, but I doubt it will last.

What do you all think about the show?  I’m sure most of you watched it too and had similar thoughts to mine.

The Perfect Sheep Jump

June 18th, 2009

Another great video that Anne posted at Gymnastike…the perfect sheep jump…

I hate watching ugly and poorly performed sheep jumps…and there are very few out there that are performed well.

Who do you think performs the best sheep jump?  Or performed the best sheep jump?
